Running stock Android ROM on your Rogers device?

If you, like me, are running a stock Rogers ROM for your android device (HTC or LG) chances are you are running Google Android 1.5. If you are, I need your help.

In the coming weeks, working with @IWMOPS and @GreatBigDog01, we are putting together some material which we would like to share with Rogers. As part of this material we would like to include a list of Android applications which, unless you root your phone and load a 1.6 or above ROM, are not available to us. This will help us make our case even more stronger to show Rogers that they really need to get serious about Android in developing a update strategy which will benefit not just their customers but will allow Rogers to better understand Android and make sound decisions in the future.

In the coming months Rogers will be releasing Sony Xperia X10 and possibly Samsung Galaxy Spica, the former running 1.6 while the latter will still be running 1.5. After the push from the Canadian Android community, both Rogers and HTC have now promised that the Magic will see an update to Android 2.1 by the middle of this year. One would’ve also hoped that based on historical experience, Rogers would’ve learned a thing or two about Android. However, the fact that the Xperia and Galaxy Spica are to be released with a relatively older OS version is indicative of no actual lessons learned.

So I would like to ask for you to take a few minutes of your time to give us a list of the applications which you really would like to use but are unable to do so because your Rogers device is running an older generation OS. Include your application names as comments to this post.

Thank you!

PodCamp Toronto 2010

PodCamp Toronto 2010

Pod Camp Toronto 2010 took place this past weekend at Rogers Communication Centre (RCC). RCC is a facility part of the Ryerson University campus. Ryerson is the university I attended for my Information Technology Management degree.

PodCamp Toronto, also known as #PCTO2010 in the twitter-verse is all about bringing together professionals and hobbyists in one place to share and exchange information, ideas and explore new/social media. The un-conference ran for two days, February 20th to 21st. Although I was only able to attend the first day, I had a whole lot of fun attending the sessions which interested me. Planning the Trip – Car vs. TTC vs. GO

Here is a comparison on how in my opinion public transit is not always the most efficient way of getting to and from work. More specifically the TTC is not always the best route.

By Car (via Google Maps) – 11 / 12 minutes

Rogers unwilling to provide feature list

Rogers HTC Magic & Dream

Rogers HTC Magic & Dream

This past weekend, Rogers made available an update to the Android 1.5 OS which powers both the HTC Magic and Dream devices. This update supposedly resolved the 911 / GPS bug which was identified several months ago. Why it took Rogers so long to provide a fix for a bug which they were informed about almost 4 months ago and was patched by various other wireless providers is a whole another story. But I am mentioning this to set some context on the reason for this new update. Read the rest of this entry »
